Your Need To Be Perfect Is Making You Boring
Social media is moving extremely fast, and there you are - not moving at all.
I think of this tweet I saw that said, creatives are sitting on content and ideas, while Baddies is in their thousandth season.
No, I am not saying Baddies is good content at all but the analogy is a reflection of how waiting to be perfect does you no justice. If you ever had the displeasure of engaging with a baddies episode, you’d know that the production is not the best. The transitions may be from iMovie and the intro song might be recorded on a phone, HOWEVER, the viewership is very real. As a franchise, Baddies pulls in anywhere from 2 million to nearly 100 million views per season on the app, while bringing in tens of millions and potentially over $100 million annually across its various monetization streams.
It’s a prime example of taking an idea (bad or not), moving fast, and executing. People who act immediately see results faster.
While talent and aesthetics are great, in a fast-paced world, VISIBILITY and CONSISTENCY are what truly win.
The Social Shift from Perfect to Real
As a social media strategist myself, I personally believe people are growing exhausted by perfectionism in social content. Everything is oversaturated, flooded with creators using the exact same glitter sound effects and typewriter fonts. Content has become so overdone that people are bored, and your need to appear perfect to your audience is BORING.
50% of consumers report feeling overwhelmed by the sheer volume of content on social platforms, with over 30% stating they actively scroll past over-edited or hyper-templated content. 8% of consumers state authenticity is a key factor when deciding which brands and creators to support—yet fewer than 20% of consumers view traditional, highly polished creator content as authentic.
In Summary, consumers want familiarity and authenticity right now. They want to interact with creators who feel like friends on FaceTime, placing consistent engagement over polished photos, graphics, or perfectly edited reels.
Community Building Is The Only Stat That Matters Right Now
Community building is the most important social stat you can have right now, and it’s immeasurable. Consumers are being intentional not only with their dollars, but also with where they spend their attention. They’re keeping up with accounts that aren't afraid to be cringe, funny, and real. I mean, just think of the rise of 2000s-themed content. I never predicted bold text graphics would make a comeback, but they’re outperforming almost everything today—sometimes even Reels. They work because they’re simple, quick to read, and most importantly, SHAREABLE.
Even Reels no longer need fancy 3D motion graphic intros that take forever to build. We’re back to using plain Instagram fonts that run through the entire video without even adjusting the duration. As a video editor, that is such a MOOD (f**k precision)
All this to say: stop being boring and start taking action. Start posting. If you have an idea, just take a second to move on it.
Your perfectionism has cost you so many opportunities. The social media world has completely flipped, it’s no longer about high-quality production, but about who is the realest and most consistent.
Of course, aim higher than the bare minimum, but move like you have to get this idea out into the world.
And if you don’t know where to start? You can always hit me up.
